Recording was not allowed during the presentation of Bethesda Softworks’The Evil Within (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One) at E3 2013. This is a bit of a tragedy because as with many survival horror titles, showing is much better than telling. Game developer Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil) brings dark visions to life in this new title that looks to bring things back to the “pure” survival horror games of yesteryear on consoles, a genre that has recently experienced somewhat of a cult revival on PC thanks to titles like Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
In pure titles of the genre, players are often left to cope with horrors and creatures of the night without adequate means of defense, something that has been lost as more and more survival horror games have embraced modern FPS elements and involved more shooting, less scaring.
The demo included everything one would expect from classic survival horror combined with top-notch graphics and audio. If the demo is any indicator,The Evil Within is shaping up to be a dark room delight. The AI is “problem solving intelligent” and as such the individual playing through the demo actually died during the demonstration by accident. This element of bringing complex variations to a model that could previously simply be gamed by trial and error attempts does wonders to heighten the mood.
The demo featured an ever-popular horror location, an asylum, in which protagonist Sebastian experiences a rather traumatic game of cat and mouse with a horrific butcher. There’s lots of sneaking, lots of running, and lots of hiding. This was just the opening sequence, and it had more tension than most games deliver during an entire playthrough.

A sequence from much later in the game was then shown, featuring some dark house exploration that ends up with a mass of zombies swarming the area known as Perth House. It’s all done quite brilliantly, as Sebastian slowly makes his way through the house and gets a glimpse of a few undead shamblers down in the basement.

Upon returning upstairs, Sebastian sees a mass of zombies coming up the hill towards Perth House out the window. Despite utilizing precious rounds of ammunition and a few traps rigged to go off, Sebastian finds himself quite outmatched by the horde. In both scenes explored in the demo, tension is heightened masterfully, released, and then heightened some more. It’s a technique than can be difficult to pull off, but Mikami’s masterstrokes are clearly visible even in just a scant 20 minutes of gameplay.
The zombies didn’t seem to particularly care much as pistol rounds blew off various pieces of their bodies such as jaws or limbs… This failed to slow their assault and actually just made them look more terrifying and unusual. The sequence ends as Sebastian runs downstairs for refuge and finds himself in a different area completely (a hospital?) and finds yet another equally creepy aberration waiting for him.
I have extremely high expectations for The Evil Within at this point. Titles likeAmnesia: The Dark Descent have shown that audiences are willing to embrace and enjoy experiences lacking rocket launchers, zombie massacres, and heaps of ammunition. The prospect of returning the genre to its roots is an exciting one, and next gen audio and visual technology will allow for more immersion and more scares – The kind of thing titles like Alone in The Dark didn’t have access to. I’m also hoping the title doesn’t involve some kind of story arc where the protagonist is hallucinating/dreaming everything and/or responsible for all the death/destruction/end of the world, but we’ll have to see what happens there.
